The Houston Astros are actively pursuing star reliever Josh Hader in the free-agent market to address the void in their bullpen left by Kendall Graveman’s anticipated season-ending right shoulder surgery. According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Astros are making a concerted effort to sign Hader, marking a continuation of their interest in the pitcher.
Reports from The Athletic, specifically Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome, indicate that the Astros previously made a play for Hader before the 2023 Trade Deadline. Hader has a history with the Astros, having spent time in their Minor League system before moving to the Brewers in the middle of the 2015 season.
The Astros’ pursuit of Hader comes at a time when the reliever is reportedly seeking the richest contract for a reliever, a distinction currently held by Edwin Díaz with his five-year, $102 million deal with the Mets. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com suggests that with each passing day without a deal, Hader’s chances of securing such a substantial contract may decrease. The evolving dynamics of Hader’s eventual contract terms remain a point of intrigue.
While it is unclear whether the Astros have formally extended an offer to Hader, his addition to the team would significantly strengthen their bullpen. Combining Hader with Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu could create a formidable trio at the backend of Houston’s pitching roster, enhancing the team’s prospects for the upcoming season.
