During his tenure at Kentucky, Liam Coen led the offensive unit to notable achievements in the 2023 season. With an average of 29.1 points per game and a remarkable 50 touchdowns, the team set a school record with 8.0 yards per touch. This marked Coen’s second stint as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, having held the same position in 2021. In 2021, under Coen’s guidance, the Wildcats ranked fifth in scoring offense (32.3 points per game) and eighth in total offense (452.2 yards per game) in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The team secured the fifth spot in rushing offense, averaging 199.5 yards per game. Coen’s impact was evident as quarterback Will Levis claimed the sixth position in the SEC for passing yards (2,826), and both running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and receiver Wan’Dale Robinson finished the year with the second-most rushing (1,379) and receiving yards (1,334) in the SEC, respectively.
In the interim between his Kentucky stints, Coen served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 under Head Coach Sean McVay. During this period, Baker Mayfield joined the Rams for five games under Coen and McVay’s mentorship before moving to the Buccaneers in 2023. Coen’s prior roles with the Rams, including assistant wide receivers coach and assistant quarterbacks coach, contributed to the team’s impressive offensive rankings across four seasons: seventh in yards per game, fifth in passing yards per game, and ninth in points per game.
Coen’s familiarity with the Buccaneers’ offensive system is strengthened by his previous collaboration with former Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on the Rams’ staff. Waldron later became the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, and Dave Canales, a part of the Waldron coaching tree, transitioned from the Seahawks’ quarterbacks coach to OC in Tampa Bay in 2023. Coen is set to bring these cohesive principles, emphasizing the synergy between the run and pass game, to the Buccaneers.
Before his Rams tenure, Coen spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Maine (2016–17), contributing to quarterback Dan Collins’ development. Earlier, he served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at the University of Massachusetts (2014–15), guiding First-Team All-Mid-American Conference quarterback Blake Frohnapfel. Coen also spent three years as the quarterbacks coach at Brown University (2010, 2012–13), where he played a pivotal role in leading the team to become the Ivy League’s top passing attack in 2010, averaging 244.3 yards.
Starting his football journey as a standout high school quarterback, Coen continued his success at UMass, setting numerous program records during his four-year starting career from 2005–08. His accomplishments included records for completions, attempts, completion percentage, passing yards, yards per attempt, passing touchdowns, and passer rating.
