The Las Vegas Raiders are poised to welcome Luke Getsy as their new offensive coordinator, according to sources confirmed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler late Saturday night. The 39-year-old Getsy, formerly in the same role with the Chicago Bears, impressed team officials during the interview process. He will now assume the playcalling responsibilities that were initially anticipated for former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury before negotiations broke down.
Getsy’s tenure with the Chicago Bears came to an end on January 10, as part of the team’s staff restructuring while retaining head coach Matt Eberflus for the upcoming 2024 season. The Bears concluded the 2023 season with a 7-10 record, sharing the bottom spot in the NFC North with the Minnesota Vikings.
Initially set to join the coaching staff of Las Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce, Kingsbury’s potential move was halted due to a breakdown in contract talks on Saturday, as revealed by agent Erik Burkhardt to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Subsequently, Kingsbury has become a candidate for the offensive coordinator position with the Washington Commanders, as reported by sources earlier on the same Saturday.
The Chicago Bears faced player dissatisfaction with their offensive performance throughout the 2023 season. In Week 3, quarterback Justin Fields attributed his “robotic” play to coaching, expressing frustration. Wide receiver DJ Moore also cited the lack of consistent explosive plays as a reason for Chicago’s shortcomings. Ultimately, Getsy bore the consequences of these frustrations.
Reflecting on the season, Coach Eberflus commented on the need for improvement in the offense’s growth and development, particularly in the passing game. Getsy’s Chicago offense ranked 17th in offensive points per game at 20.4, marking the highest since 2018 when it stood at 11th, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The passing offense saw an improvement from 32nd to 27th, averaging 182.1 yards per game, while the Bears boasted the NFL’s second-best rushing offense at 141.1 yards per game.
Las Vegas, having finished the previous season with an 8-9 record, will look to Getsy to enhance their offensive performance. Despite scoring 357 points, the Raiders’ quarterbacks collectively earned an 80.1 QBR rating. The news of Getsy’s hiring was first reported by Sports Illustrated.
