LORAN SMITH: GRATITUDE FOR THE YEARS, CLAUDE
We knew this moment was approaching, but before we dwell on the changes that time inevitably brings, let’s hold back our tears and express our gratitude with a heartfelt rendition of “Thanks for the Memories.”
Claude Felton, a modest, sincere, and principled individual, has dedicated over four decades of his life to serving the University of Georgia with unwavering passion, dedication, loyalty, and honesty. The University has been fortunate to have only two Sports Information Directors in its history—Claude and his predecessor, Dan Magill, who was known as the “Publicity Director” in earlier times.
Magill, deeply rooted in Athens and deeply devoted to UGA, blazed a trail of excellence, striving for nothing less than the best in every endeavor, which explains his diverse array of interests.
Felton operated in a similar manner, a consummate professional with few distractions apart from occasional fishing trips. While he once excelled at tennis, his primary focus has always been his work.
I recall inviting him on a trout fishing excursion one spring afternoon, but he declined, citing a softball game that demanded his attention. Regardless of the sport, Claude dedicated himself wholeheartedly to every program, showing up for events ranging from football and basketball to gymnastics, softball, swimming, golf, and soccer. Each of Georgia’s 21 sports received his utmost respect and effort.
His organizational prowess and unwavering discipline were remarkable. He was always the first in the office, even on weekends and during the summer. Lunch often consisted of a sandwich at his desk as he tirelessly worked into the evening.
His Saturdays were spent at various competitions across campus, and Sundays were reserved for church in the morning followed by office work in the afternoon.
For years, he made the journey to the Florida game on Thursdays to handle media-related matters in Jacksonville, returning home well past midnight after the game to ensure he wouldn’t miss church the next morning.
He’s always made himself accessible, with a listed phone number and a willingness to assist media representatives even after hours. Despite his gentle demeanor, he’s never hesitated to defend the University of Georgia against unfair criticism.
Despite his humility, Claude is widely respected, both by his peers and by media professionals. His contributions have earned him a place in the College Sports Information Directors Hall of Fame and the admiration of everyone from seasoned broadcasters to rookie interns.
While Claude is an engaging conversationalist, he prioritizes his work and then heads home to prepare for another day at the office.
Few individuals within the Georgia Athletic Association have demonstrated the level of dedication, integrity, and passion for the Red and Black that Claude has. He’s a man of quiet but profound commitment to his work and his alma mater—a true Bulldog through and through.
