Led by starters Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, and Jack Campbell, supported by backups Malcolm Rodriguez, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, and Anthony Pittman, the linebacker corps displayed remarkable depth and effectiveness.
Anzalone’s performance was particularly noteworthy, setting career highs in tackles, sacks, quarterback hits, and tackles for loss despite missing only one game. His leadership as a near-every-down team captain has been instrumental in the Lions’ defensive growth over three seasons. Alongside Anzalone, the emergence of Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, and Malcolm Rodriguez added significant depth to the unit, elevating the Lions’ defense out of the league’s bottom ranks.
Under the guidance of coaches Aaron Glenn and Kelvin Sheppard, the linebackers’ development mirrored the franchise’s trajectory, with notable improvement seen each year. While there were occasional challenges, particularly evident in the loss to Baltimore, the linebackers played a crucial role in the Lions’ ascent to a top-three run defense.

Meanwhile, Reeves-Maybin faces a pending free agency, potentially seeking a more significant defensive role elsewhere due to the Lions’ linebacker depth.
Malcolm Rodriguez, despite a demotion, maintained his impact, excelling on special teams and demonstrating potential for defensive contributions. Similarly, Anthony Pittman’s consistent special teams performance since 2019 positions him as a likely returnee, given his restricted free agent status.
