ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently revealed a potential quarterback scenario for the Chicago Bears in 2024 that could be seen as quite perplexing. The suggestion is that the Bears might draft Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and retain Justin Fields on the roster. This idea has sparked discussion within the organization.
Since securing the No. 1 pick, which they acquired from the Carolina Panthers, speculation has arisen regarding the Bears’ quarterback situation. Would they continue with Fields into his fourth season, or opt for a reset with Williams, who is projected to be the first quarterback selected? The debate around Fields is intriguing.
Fields has played 40 games over three years, throwing 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, along with 38 fumbles. Despite his tenure in the NFL, there are lingering doubts about whether he is a franchise quarterback. Typically, successful franchise quarterbacks establish themselves by their second year at the latest, making Fields’ progression uncertain. Some within the Bears’ organization may still believe in Fields but acknowledge the unlikelihood of his development, leading to the possibility of him staying as a QB2.

However, this raises questions about Fields’ willingness to accept a secondary role. He may prefer to seek opportunities elsewhere and could request a trade. In such a scenario, Schefter’s report becomes moot. The logical move for Chicago would be to trade Fields to the highest bidder and start fresh with Williams, securing a cost-controlled quarterback for the future. This approach avoids the financial commitment that would be required to retain Fields, whose performance has not justified such an investment.
The notion of both Fields and Williams being on the Bears’ roster in 2024 is plausible until it is not. Ultimately, Chicago’s decision will hinge on how they prioritize their quarterback future and manage the dynamics of their QB room.
