The construction company Webuild has offered to renovate San Siro stadium to ensure AC Milan and Inter Milan can continue playing there. The City Council hopes both teams can stay at San Siro during the renovation, as the stadium nears 35 years since its last major update. Mayor Sala is working to convince at least one team to stay.
The renovation project by Arco Associati, presented to the council commission in January, aims to address this. Recently, Webuild, known for projects like Milan’s metro line 4, expressed interest in the renovation. Although their letter to the Milan Council and MI Stadio didn’t mention Arco’s project, it aligned with its goals, emphasizing the stadium could remain open during renovations.
Webuild’s CEO, Pietro Salini, stated their readiness to collaborate in revitalizing the stadium for better long-term use. They aim to improve access, safety, and the stadium’s lifespan, and enhance its architectural and symbolic significance. Their plan includes making the stadium suitable for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics and complying with UEFA standards.
Sala has requested an urgent meeting with Milan and Inter to discuss the possibility of them staying at San Siro. Webuild is prepared to conduct feasibility studies, provide cost estimates, and propose timelines for the renovation. They believe the renovation could be largely compatible with the teams’ schedules, especially in the summer, and offer multi-year planning to ensure continuity of events.
Overall, Webuild’s offer opens the door to a collaborative effort to revitalize San Siro, providing a potential solution to the current uncertainties surrounding the stadium’s future and the teams’ residence during its renovation.
