Breaking: Bengals’ New Coach and Offensive Line Emphasize Pass Protection for Critical 2024 Season…

The Cincinnati Bengals have faced significant challenges in protecting their quarterbacks since the 2017 offseason, which saw many quality offensive linemen leave the team. This has led to difficulties in their passing game, ultimately impacting their overall performance. The team’s star quarterback, Joe Burrow, has suffered season-ending injuries in two out of his first four NFL seasons, highlighting the urgent need for improved pass protection to avoid jeopardizing his massive $275 million contract extension.

In an effort to address this issue, the Bengals have hired Justin Rascati, previously the passing game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and a former college quarterback. Rascati’s background suggests a focus on pass protection, which was underscored in his recent interview with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. Rascati emphasized the importance of building an offensive system that considers the quarterback’s skill set while also focusing on the offensive line’s perspective, highlighting the critical role of protection in winning games at the line of scrimmage.

Despite the Bengals’ previous efforts, including the hiring of respected offensive line coach Frank Pollack in 2021, the team has struggled to maximize the talent on its offensive line. For instance, Jonah Williams, the team’s highest-drafted offensive lineman, has regressed significantly under Pollack’s coaching, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the team’s pass-blocking technique.

One of the main issues has been the failure of Cincinnati’s tackles to maintain their positions and block effectively, allowing opposing defensive ends to exploit gaps and pressure the quarterback. Williams, in particular, has struggled with footwork and technique against speed rushers, highlighting the need for improvement in pass protection.

As the Bengals look ahead to the 2024 season, they will need Rascati and Pollack to work together to address these issues and elevate the team’s pass-blocking technique. Protecting Burrow will be crucial for the team’s success, and improving the offensive line will be key to achieving their goals.
