Washington Commanders Contemplate Kirk Cousins Reunion, Pass on Top QB Prospects in 2024 Draft Amidst Free Agency Overhaul
Under new ownership led by Josh Harris, the Washington Commanders are ushering in a new era with significant changes. Dan Quinn, former defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, has taken over as head coach, replacing Ron Rivera. Kliff Kingsbury, former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, now serves as the offensive coordinator, succeeding Eric Bieniemy.
The team faces a major overhaul in player personnel, with up to 10 starters set to hit free agency next month. Despite this, Washington boasts the most cap space in the league, nearly $90 million, providing them with ample flexibility.
Following a disappointing 2023 season, especially on defense, where the team traded away Montez Sweat and Chase Young, the Commanders are expected to make significant changes, particularly at defensive end.
The most significant decision for the Commanders revolves around the quarterback position. While Sam Howell, their 2022 5th round pick, has shown promise, questions linger about his long-term potential as a franchise quarterback. With the 2nd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, many expected Washington to select a quarterback, possibly Jayden Daniels from LSU or Drake Maye from North Carolina.
However, there are rumors of a potential reunion with former quarterback Kirk Cousins. Despite concerns about Cousins’ age—he will turn 36 in 2024—and his playoff performance, he is seen as a reliable top 15 quarterback. This move could allow Washington to trade out of the 2nd overall pick, acquiring additional draft capital while signing Cousins with their cap space.
While Washington is likely to prioritize a young quarterback in the draft, a reunion with Cousins remains a possibility. The team’s strategy will become clearer during free agency, with Cousins also deciding on his next playing destination, which could potentially be his final stop in the NFL.
