The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for the 2024 season, aiming to elevate their roster from playoff contenders to championship contenders. This ambition comes just two seasons after trading away the legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a move that many fans didn’t expect.
Recent reports suggest that one player could help the Packers achieve their goal. ESPN’s staff writer Matt Bowen has identified New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney as a perfect fit for Green Bay. In his article on ideal landing spots for free agents, Bowen highlights McKinney’s ability to play both safety positions, offering coverage skills and range in the post. McKinney’s performance with the Giants, including three interceptions last season, underscores his potential impact on a Packers defense undergoing coverage and pressure changes under defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
Interestingly, the Packers had the opportunity to draft McKinney in 2020 but opted for quarterback Jordan Love instead, trading up to secure Love. McKinney was subsequently selected by the Giants with the 36th overall pick. McKinney’s impressive stats, including a 53.0 passer rating when targeted, 8.7 yards per reception, 94 solo tackles, one forced fumble, and three interceptions in 2023, make him a valuable addition to any defense.
McKinney’s versatility is evident in his playing time distribution last season, with snaps at free safety, in the box, in the slot, close to the line of scrimmage, and even as an outside corner. At just 24 years old, McKinney aligns with the Packers’ recent focus on youth, making him an ideal candidate for their roster. With a projected contract value of $6.5 million in year one, McKinney’s addition could bolster the Packers’ defense and contribute to their championship aspirations.
