Breaking: Washington Commanders are Set to Bring in Bengals’ 26 years old offensive tackle Jonah Williams to Replace Andrew Wylie…

The Washington Commanders are eyeing Jonah Williams from the Cincinnati Bengals as a potential replacement for Andrew Wylie at right tackle in the 2024 NFL free agency. Bryan Manning of Commanders Wire believes Williams is a viable option for Washington, as the Bengals may prioritize other players due to salary constraints. Williams, who started his career at left tackle before moving to right tackle in 2023, could attract interest from teams considering him for the left tackle position, which might affect his contract demands.

For the Commanders, signing Williams to play right tackle and drafting a left tackle for the future seems like a prudent strategy, especially with a rookie quarterback to protect. This move could also save them from overspending, given their specific positional needs. Wylie, on the other hand, faces an uncertain future with the team, particularly because of his significant salary cap hit for 2024.

Washington’s offensive line could see significant changes in 2024, with potentially four new starters. However, right guard Sam Cosmi is expected to retain his position after an impressive 2023 season where he ranked fourth among all guards, according to PFF Commanders. Cosmi’s success in his new role contributed to the decision to sign Wylie, although the move did not yield the desired results.

In contrast, Williams had a solid performance at right tackle, particularly excelling in pass protection. His ability was evident in games like Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings, where he received praise from PFF CIN Bengals. Despite a setback with shoulder surgery in his rookie season, Williams rebounded to become a key player for the Bengals, notably contributing to their 2021 playoff success.

One standout play exemplifying Williams’ impact was a decisive drive block against Pro-Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, creating an opening for Joe Mixon’s touchdown during the playoff game against the Tennessee Titans. Williams’ consistent performance and potential to stabilize the right tackle position make him an appealing option for the Commanders as they aim to strengthen their offensive line for the upcoming season.
