The Washington Commanders find themselves in a favorable position after the NFL salary cap surged to $255 million this year, leaving them with an impressive $96 million to bolster their roster. This significant cap space gives them a competitive edge in the upcoming free agency period, allowing them to address multiple gaps in their team.
One area that requires immediate attention is their defense, which is losing key players like linebacker Cody Barton, safety Kam Curl, and cornerback Kendall Fuller. The Commanders also traded away defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young during the 2023 season, further depleting their defensive lineup.
Analyst Sam Monson highlighted defense as the team’s biggest weakness, noting that the free-agent pool is rich in defensive talent. He suggested that the Commanders could make a significant impact by signing top-tier linebackers such as Danielle Hunter, Brian Burns, and Bryce Huff.
To fill the void left by Kam Curl at safety, the Commanders could target Kyle Dugger, a versatile player formerly with the New England Patriots. Dugger’s unique blend of size and versatility could make him a valuable asset in Coach Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme.
Quinn, known for leveraging hybrid player skills, could deploy Dugger similarly to how he used Micah Parsons and Jayron Kearse in his previous role as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Parsons and Kearse played multiple positions, showcasing Quinn’s ability to maximize player potential.
The increased salary cap not only benefits the Commanders but also other teams like the Dallas Cowboys, who are struggling to comply with the cap. Several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins, will need to restructure player contracts to meet the cap requirements.
The higher cap limit, attributed to increased media revenue, provides teams with more flexibility, especially those managing expensive quarterback contracts and veteran players. The Commanders, in particular, can use this financial boost to address issues on their offensive line, as quarterback Sam Howell was sacked a league-leading 65 times in 2023. While right guard Sam Cosmi is expected to retain his starting position, the Commanders may seek reinforcements at left guard and center through free agency.
