The Minnesota Twins might see their youth movement kick into high gear early this year, as Spring Training progresses and the team finalizes its roster for Opening Day, less than a month away. Last season’s youthful infusion helped the team break a 19-year postseason drought, and a similar trend could unfold this season with several promising prospects in the mix.
Despite the potential, it’s important to note that not all prospects will make the cut for the 26-man roster. Limited spots and competition for roles mean tough decisions lie ahead for the Twins.
One prospect unlikely to make the Opening Day roster is Yunior Severino. However, his performance is worth monitoring as the season unfolds. The Twins added Severino to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, indicating the team’s high regard for him. He demonstrated impressive power at Triple-A St. Paul last year, hitting 24 homers in 87 games at Double-A Wichita and another 11 home runs in 36 games at Triple-A.
While Severino is not expected to join the team at the start of the season, he could become a valuable option, particularly at first base, in case of injuries to Alex Kirilloff or Carlos Santana. Although his immediate call-up seems unlikely, now could be a smart time for fans to take notice of his potential impact.
