Update: The top 3 Evident Deficiencies For Georgia Post-Transfer Portal Acquisitions

When a team consistently secures the best or second-best recruiting class in the nation and boasts a two-time national champion coach enjoying the benefits of NIL deals, it might seem challenging to pinpoint any significant gaps in the roster left unaddressed. For Georgia, led by Coach Kirby Smart, if the loss of key running backs like Daijuan Edwards and Kendall Milton to the NFL occurs, Smart can strategically pursue talent like Trevor Etienne from Florida to fill the void. Similarly, if a player like Ladd McConkey departs, Smart has the luxury of recruiting a suitable replacement with an equally Southern name, such as London Humphreys from Vanderbilt.

While stating that there are “glaring needs” may be a stretch for Georgia, as demonstrated by last season’s shortcomings against Alabama in the SEC title game, it becomes evident that the program is not flawless. The 2023 team had its flaws, and despite the addition of six elite transfers and securing the top high school class in the country, not all of these issues have been fully addressed. Even with the influx of new talent, Georgia may still benefit from a few more additions. If Smart refrains from making moves during the May transfer portal window, there is a possibility that these three position groups could become potential weak points if Georgia faces challenges in the upcoming season.

1. **Offensive Line:**
In the transfer portal, Smart’s focus was primarily on replacing key players at the skill positions, such as Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, Daijuan Edwards, and Kendall Milton, rather than fortifying the offensive line. However, with the departure of Amarius Mims and Sedrick Van Pran to the NFL, the offensive line could have benefited from additional reinforcements. While Xavier Truss and Earnest Greene II are set to play the tackle positions, and Tate Ratledge and Dylan Fairchild will return at guard, the experienced depth has diminished. The starting center position will be filled by Jared Wilson, who played just 111 snaps in 2023. For a team emphasizing the run game, a dominant center becomes crucial, and there might be some initial challenges, especially in pass protection, as Georgia transitions to developing more versatile backups.

Despite the talent on the roster, plugging holes with a veteran offensive lineman from the transfer portal could have been a prudent move for Smart and his coaching staff. It would provide insurance against potential growing pains and ensure stability in crucial positions, particularly as the team strives for success in the upcoming season.
