Miami Heat player Haywood Highsmith has been issued a citation for driving recklessly and negligently following a car accident on Tuesday night, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. The incident resulted in a man sustaining a partial amputation to his right leg.
Highsmith, who was uninjured in the crash, was returning home from Miami’s victory over the Orlando Magic at Kaseya Center, as stated by the Heat in a released statement on Wednesday.
According to the crash report, the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. when Highsmith’s 2021 Audi A5 collided with a disabled 1999 Toyota 4Runner, which had its lights off. A man was assisting a woman with the disabled vehicle when Highsmith, driving approximately 5 mph over the speed limit at an estimated 45 mph, failed to stop in time, hitting both the disabled car and the man.
The injured man was rushed to South Medical Center in critical condition, suffering not only a partial amputation but also a fractured left leg and a possible broken left arm, according to the report.
The Heat’s statement expressed condolences to those affected by the accident but did not elaborate further on the incident, stating that there would be no additional comments.
It’s noted that Highsmith’s citation is not classified as a criminal offense, confirmed by a Miami-Dade Police spokesperson. Additionally, Highsmith did not participate in the team’s game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
