Cincinnati Reds Rejected $20M Deal on Joey Votto, Terminating Reds career after 17 seasons

The Cincinnati Reds have opted not to exercise Joey Votto’s $20 million option for the 2024 season, making the first baseman a free agent and potentially concluding his 17-season tenure with the team. Votto will receive a $7 million buyout, marking the end of a contract that guaranteed him $251.5 million over 12 seasons.General manager Nick Krall emphasized that the decision was not based on financial considerations but rather the team’s current roster dynamics. With other players in contention for playing time, the Reds are prioritizing the development of their roster. While Krall didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a future deal with Votto, he highlighted the current lack of playing time available for the veteran.

During the conference call, Krall disclosed that he informed Votto of the decision while the player was in Spain. The move was discussed with CEO Bob Castellini, and at this point, there have been no talks of a new deal.

Joey Votto, at 40, had a season where he batted .202 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs in 65 games. His 2023 season debut was delayed until June 19 due to surgery on his left biceps and rotator cuff, exactly 10 months prior.

The Reds also declined their part of a $4 million mutual option with catcher Curt Casali, who will receive a $750,000 buyout. Casali, a 10-year MLB veteran, posted a .175 batting average with six RBIs in 50 games during his first season with the Reds. The decision was made as the Reds look to explore opportunities for other players, indicating a focus on roster adjustments for the upcoming season.
