Paul Dehner Jr., a writer for The Athletic, suggests that the Cincinnati Bengals should strongly consider moving on from running back Joe Mixon this offseason. Despite Mixon’s popularity among fans, Dehner argues that there are few logical reasons for the team to retain him.
One of the few arguments in favor of keeping Mixon is sentimental attachment. Some fans and perhaps the team itself may value his long tenure with the Bengals and the physical, “power back” role he plays. However, Dehner believes that sentimentality should not outweigh the team’s strategic and financial considerations.

Financially, retaining Mixon is a significant commitment for the Bengals. He is due a $3 million roster bonus and has an $8.85 million cap hit for the 2024 season. By releasing him, the team would free up $5.8 million in cap space, which could be used to acquire more impactful players who better fit the team’s needs.
Dehner also points out that Mixon’s style of play as a power back may not align with the Bengals’ desired offensive identity. While Mixon can be effective in certain situations, the team may prefer a more versatile and explosive player to complement star wide receiver Chase Brown.
