Vikings New Decision: Trading 24 years old Star Receiver Justin Jefferson to Reset Offense, Letting Kirk Cousins Walk…

The Minnesota Vikings are facing a challenging situation at quarterback, leading to speculation about bold moves for the team.

One suggestion gaining traction is to trade star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and reset the offense without him or quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2024. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz proposed this idea, along with other bold moves for NFL teams.

Jefferson’s salary has risen to $19.7 million due to his fifth-year option in 2024, with the potential for even higher earnings in a long-term extension. He has expressed a desire to know the team’s future quarterback plans before committing to such an extension.

While Cousins had a strong half-season in 2023, giving him another long-term deal at age 35 may not be wise for Minnesota’s future. Trading Jefferson for high draft picks and using one to draft his replacement, similar to how the team acquired Jefferson, is suggested. This pick could be used on a young quarterback or to trade up for a better prospect.

Spotrac estimates Jefferson’s market value at $29.3 million annually over a new four-year contract, totaling over $117 million. Given his performance, he could command an even higher figure, especially with the salary cap increasing by $30 million in 2024.

However, retaining both Jefferson and Cousins would be costly, potentially affecting other areas of the Vikings’ roster. While trading Jefferson would be painful given his potential, it may be necessary for the team’s long-term success if they also retain Cousins.

Ultimately, dealing Jefferson is unlikely due to his immense talent and potential impact over the next decade. However, if the Vikings cannot secure a franchise quarterback with less wear than Cousins and higher playoff potential, the team’s leadership could face significant changes in the near future.
